Future Prairie

Mission statement: Founded in January 2018 by Joni Renee Whitworth in Portland, Oregon, Future Prairie is a non-profit organization and artist collective led by women, femme, queer, transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals. We develop emerging and under-represented artists.

Future Prairie Radio, our podcast, features interviews with women, femme, queer, transgender and gender nonconforming technologists, painters, photographers, policy makers, musicians, filmmakers, and activists who are designing a tomorrow rooted in equity and innovation.

Our Future Prairie Variety Show features intimate performances from dancers, teachers, painters, singers, poets, and comedians. The show is inspired by the chautauquas of the 19th and early 20th centuries, where people from all walks of life came together to experience education, entertainment, and culture for the whole community.

Mission
In alignment with humanist and modern futurist values, we provide our artists with the training, resources, collaboration opportunities, and support they need to establish their art careers. We also host a podcast and curate events, exhibitions, performances, and published works.

For many years, Portlanders have spoken of a cultural responsibility to protect, promote, and pay emerging and under-represented artists.

We believe the time has come to make good on theories and promises.

We believe artists have an opportunity to design and co-create a future that is inclusive and inspiring.

We believe art is a valid form of social and personal healing.

We believe art is just one stroke of a broader suite of forward-looking societal upgrades, including access to nourishing food, a healthy environment, safe housing, and education.

When we say "under-represented artists", we are specifically referring to creatives of different abilities, races, gender identities, national origin, religion, and age. We aim to serve historically-marginalized groups such as women, racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual minorities, and low-income individuals.
